DESCRIPTION
This offering centers culturally connected baby carrying (also known as “babywearing”) as its framework and is for people who teach others and who are committed to integrating as many justice-oriented values as we can when doing so.
Part 1:
We will explore a variety of strategies for communicating information & skills crucial for baby carrying.
Strategies include:
- Deepening our understanding of power dynamics, oppressions, and opportunities to integrate transformative justice into our work.
- Inclusive & effective language that makes room for identity, past experiences of trauma, family configurations and more.
- A brief exploration of managing expectations and considering the sensory experiences of those you are helping
- Working to remove (or at least acknowledge) oppressive rationales and terms
- Improving our responsiveness to a broader array of neurotypes and cultural experiences
- Affirming people’s selves in as much complexity as possible, cultural reclamation, and more.
Part 2:
This session will be devoted to modeling & integrating the skills & strategies presented in part one.

FACILITATOR
Angelique Geehan (all pronouns) works as a coach, consultant, editor, and facilitator to support and repair the connections people have to themselves and their families, communities, and cultural practices. She builds intergenerationally, with a commitment to transformative justice, to question and depolarize the beliefs and practices that can lead to isolation and feelings of powerlessness — and co-create or reclaim ways that can promote resilience and healing from historical and social harms.
A queer asian gender (binary) non-conforming parent, Angelique founded Interchange, a consulting group that offers anti-oppression support through materials and process assessments, staff training, and community building. They organize as a part of Baby Carriers Provided, the Baby Carrier Industry Alliance, Houston Babywearing Resource, National Perinatal Association’s Health Equity Workgroup, the Health and Healing Justice Committee of the National Queer and Trans Asian and Pacific Islander Alliance, the Houston Community Accountability and Transformative Justice Collective, the Taking Care Study Group, QTPOC+ Family Circle, and Batalá Houston.
